when your thoughts turn sour make them sweet instead

[ That was...positively horrible? Ugh. After a few hours, notes are slipped under each person's door. They read, in a neat handwriting: ]

Banquet in Vanellope's honor in the dining room.

- Reyna, Sally and Thalia

[ You may not know what to expect when they say banquet, but it...really is one, isn't it? Thalia's main dish is cheeseburgers, so there are so many of those, but the table's positively covered in an arrangement of fruit and vegetables and all kinds of bread. Looks like they've gone all out.

What's really the cream of it all, though, are the desserts. Not a lot that's special, but there's a wide collection of cookies and cupcakes, and enough hot chocolate to feed an army. Maybe literally. There is a section that's particularly fancy, and that's the many candy apples, definitely courtesy of Sally. Along with a cute amount of peppermint bark. It seems like the food is unending, too, since there's the delicatible smell of baking cookies and simmering candy from the kitchen. Thalia and Sally are keeping you stocked, don't worry. ]

And what do you suppose will happen if no one tries this next week? I can't imagine it'd be any more merciful than the consequences of simply marring the walls.

...I don't know! But maybe if we all just don't participate the Narrator will get bored with us. It all could be just a bluff to get us to go along with him.

Well, I'm game to try it... Hopefully the others can be convinced.

Though I should point out no one died until our Narrator began making extra offers on top of our lives. With how much he seems to know, I wonder if he doesn't have at least one for each of us.

Easier said than done.

But there's got to be some people here who are above murder! I mean, I think I'd rather take whatever punishment the Narrator cooks up than actually kill somebody.

Oh? And what if the punishment is the death of someone you love?

[ There is something a little odious about her curiosity - perhaps the fact that it is curiosity, unburdened by concern. The suggestion doesn't seem to bother her in the least. ]

Your nephews - are the children here much older than them?

The death of-

[...

Oh.]

...No. Not by much. A couple of years, maybe, but that's- they don't have anything to do with this. The Narrator can't get to them!

Oh, don't be a fool, Donald! [ She rolls her eyes. ] He got to all of us, didn't he? He or whoever it is he's working for.

Isn't the real lesson we learned today that whoever we're dealing with is truly content with the death of a child?

They're with Scrooge! And Beakley! Those two wouldn't ever let the boys out of their sight long enough for the Narrator to get to them!

...And maybe they are. But if they think we're going to sit back and let that happen again, they've got another thing coming!

But if they all were captured - if it could be proven that they were in danger...

[ She leans in, studying him closely. ]

Could you truly say you wouldn't trade any of our lives? Even mine?

[.....]

...Y'know what, actually, I think I'm going to bed. That trial really took a lot out of me.

[ She chuckles, though it's not precisely a mirthful sound, and leans back. ]

Yes, I think rest is the wisest thing for us all to do now.

The sleepers will have a renewed energy for escape tomorrow, I'm sure, while the sleepless won't lack for ideas.

Let's hope they're both enough.
