Week 4
[Two more people died this week. Two children. And they died because of a freak accident. Despite all your protests, Randall refused to let Jane get away despite being innocent.
But there is a tiny ray of hope now, which comes in the form of the mirror. Now that the mirror is public information, you can see people you care about, even if they are dead and trapped in hell. Not only that, but you now now that someone is trying to save you all from the predicament that you're in. And this time there's a good chance that he won't turn out to be a heartless mass murderer!
Still, the ideas for the plan are vague and you have no idea when you will actually get out. It's hard to keep up hope when your only chance of living might still end with you horribly killed, isn't it?
At least you have a new floor and the ability to wash your clothes now.
26 guests remain.]
[SUNDAY MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY]
[Don't forget to fill in this week's activity check!
...There might also be someone new threadjacking some toplevels this week too. If you want to opt out of this, just let us know!\

[he'd offer to talk to Rod for Basil instead but he's still kind of scared of using the mirror. he knows once he gets it he's going to want to talk to Noby, and that'll just make him sad again. or Jiminy, and he still doesn't know if that's worth it given he doesn't want to prove that Randy was telling the truth.
and on that end, he shrugs.]
I dunno. I mean, I could ask one of 'em, but... I don't know if I really wanna know yet. I said maybe I'd try next week, if we're still here. Maybe I'll be braver then.
1/2
[ Sometimes your boyfriend has a homicidal streak, and sometimes he decides to direct it towards you, and sometimes that's all very unfortunate. ]
no subject
...You are allowed to let the rest of us handle that aspect. It is being addressed, and there are other ways you can assist.
While it is brave to do something in spite of fearing it: the action should also be something one either needs or wants to do--for reasons beyond whether it would "be brave". Bravery for its own sake is more commonly known as stupidity.
no subject
I know, but...
[He pauses for a bit to think it over before he finishes the thought.]
I have to be brave if I wanna be real, so I think I should just do it whenever I can. Even if I don't have to.
no subject
...Pinocchio. [ He remembers Molly saying something about this issue at the trial. ] Who told you you're not real? And what proof was provided?
no subject
The lady who brought me to life.
[Proof? He's not really sure about proof.]
Well, I mean... she told me that my father wished for me to be real, but that I had to prove myself, um... worthy first, I think.
no subject
...I'm not completely certain what the process you're describing involves. Correct me if I've made any errors in my understanding: your father wished for you to come to life. You were brought to life. You are currently alive.
I'm not seeing what it is you need to do at this point, or why. Is this lady going to kill you if you don't fulfill her demands? Is that what you're talking about?
[ He doesn't know enough about magic to call bullshit, maybe this is just. how life works for wooden children. Maybe it's an unavoidable fact, he really has no idea.
Sure sounds unnecessarily cruel, though. ]
no subject
And it sounds more like he's reciting something when he talks about it, rather than having a full understanding of any of it. He thought that everyone had to prove themselves to be real, but for some reason it's sounding more and more like it's just him.]
I'm supposed to be brave, truthful, and unselfish. I... I don't think she'll kill me, she seems really nice... she just won't let me become real until I learn right from wrong.
no subject
Ordinarily when one calls something "real" or "not real" they're referring to whether the thing exists (or, I suppose, how worth acknowledging that thing's existence is). You clearly exist, (and there's no call to refuse to acknowledge it of all things), but... perhaps there's some magical principle being referenced? I really wish she'd bothered to explain herself.
Well, whatever she meant by that much, the needing to learn right from wrong is hardly unreasonable. Bravery, truthfulness, and unselfishness are all admirable traits, but if you can't tell right from wrong, you'd never know how to make use of them properly.
[ ...Or she could have just meant "be a teetotaler and don't smoke or play pool" but Basil's not near close enough to being Jiminy Cricket to consider that possibility. ]
no subject
I guess maybe it is a magic thing. I coulda asked her when I saw her last time, but I wasn't really thinking about. [There was some other traumatic events going on at the time, he was kind of distracted.]
Right, yeah! I know that one's really important. [He perks up at the shift in topic. He may be pretty clueless about what the whole 'brave, truthful, unselfish' mess involves, but he's had enough lectures about the morality thing to understand that one.] That's why she gave me a conscience to help teach me and everything! But... I mean, he's not here. So it's kinda been harder most of the time-- but I'm still workin' on it.
1/3
Your conscience is a separate being. [ ...This is another one of those idk-magic moments, isn't it. ]
no subject
no subject
Wait.
None of that addresses a damned important point. ]
....To. evaluate an action. That depends on what it is you value and how much, the evaluating's worthless if you don't--damn, she most likely meant to focus on what's worth valuing. And that's where it gets complicated. Of course that's what she meant, what else would she mean?
I am not cut out to teach Sunday School. [ He should. pick someone to recommend. for this part.
Not Freddie. ]
no subject
[He's spent this whole time thinking nobody else in the manor had a conscience to begin with. But whatever, it's fine, clearly Basil has other important things to discuss--
Except, honestly, that's about where Basil loses him in the conversation.
He tries to follow along. He honestly does, and he tries even harder to make it look like he understands it, all serious and nodding along contemplatively. He even takes several long seconds after Basil's done talking to think it over further before delivering her verdict on all of that.]
...I don't get it.
no subject
[ SIGH this is embarrassing ]
I'll be honest, I... "don't get it" either, this is not a topic I've experience discussing. There's bound to be someone else here who's better at this.
But most people... their consciences are part of them. Something inherent. And... past that I don't know what to explain or how.
no subject
[He's helping. This is helpful, he's sure.]
And that doesn't make sense. You can't hear 'em if they're not really there.
no subject
pinocchio just gets the dirtiest look for that ]
Ordinarily, the person and their conscience are the same being. Making moral choices is just a matter of thinking, not a conversation.
no subject
But if I was just thinkin' about it, I'd mess things up. Jiminy's super smart, so isn't it a better idea to listen to his ideas instead? I think that's the whole point.
[Plus having your conscience be the same being means he'd be down one friend, and he has so few already. Seems like a bad situation all around.]
no subject
A conscience is... [ he's going to keep fucking this up horribly isn't he ] ...it has to do with. things like deciding not to do something that would, in every other respect, be an excellent idea, because it would cause harm?
That's why she stressed you need all those things: a conscience, bravery, unselfishness, truthfulness... they're. they're all connected. ideally.
[ aaaaaAAAAA he needs to find someone else but WHO?? ]
The point has more to do with being able to determine when one oughtn't to listen to others' ideas...
no subject
[something something the wrong way is the foolish way
Though he'll agree that it is all connected, he's apparently gone past the point of trying to understand and straight into arguing, now.]
I already know about not listening to strangers. [that's all that matters, right] So I'm learning real conscience stuff.
no subject
How will you know when not to listen to your friends?
no subject
Why would I ever not wanna listen to my friends?
no subject
[ He resists indicating Jane's picture in any way. That'd be too cruel, even for a good cause. ]
