[One week. One week spent in the Haunted Mansion, and nothing seems to have changed. The hinges still creak in doorless chambers, strange and frightening sounds still echo through and you still occasionally catch a flicker of candlelight out of the corner of your eye. You might be slowly becoming familiar with the mundanity of this communal life, and we've recognized that possibility.

Something has to give.]

I see. So I guess he'd mostly have Bibles or stuff like that? [She looks over at his writing again.] Gaston...is that a friend of yours?

He did, but I think he had his own books, too. That he'd lend out to people who were interested. There was a girl in the village... I think she was the only one really interested in reading any of them.

[He follows her gaze, and nearly drops the pencil.]

He was my...Captain.

...that's kind of sad. But I guess times are different... [She blinks at the title. Oh. Ohhhhhh. She remembers reading something about that on his profile.]

Oh, um, I'm sorry I asked. Is...is the note talking about something he made you do?

...Something I didn't stop him from doing, actually.

...oh. [A pause] Um, I don't think anyone would blame you for something like that. I've known a guy who everyone loved and listened to, even though he was planning on selling us out. That guy...sounds a bit like him. Even I would have trusted him if I hadn't overheard his actual plans.

...Guess it'd be too much to ask for for there to only be one Gaston in the world, huh.

He didn't- sell out anyone in our village, he just... Couldn't stand not getting what he wanted.

...well, the guy I know still got what he wanted in the end. [She shrugs] But we stopped him from doing too much damage. And I don't really care what he does from here, since he doesn't have any influence on us anymore.

[he goes silent at that. It sounds so much like Gaston, but Gaston caused so much hurt... He could've - maybe did kill the Beast before the curse was lifted. But he was dead, and Lefou was the only one who truly mourned him, as...complicated as that mourning was.]

There...wasn't really a clean way of dealing with my case.

...yeah, I get it. My experience probably isn't that similar to yours. Just...made me think of him, that's all. [She waves a hand.]

...How old are you, anyway?

Twelve. But I can kind of take care of myself. Had to learn after aliens abducted my mom, after all.

[Unfortunately, while he doesn't know what an alien is, dead/missing mothers is all too common.]

You don't have your father to take care of you?

He left before I was born, so I don't even remember him. I really don't care, either. [She honestly doesn't. And she hopes he doesn't end up pitying her for it.]

Oh. I'm sorry to hear that.

[...Missing/dead fathers is ALSO pretty common in 18th century France, so there you go.]

It's good that you're so self-sufficient at such a young age.

Yeah...I was still glad when I got my mom back, though.

Yeah...she has my little brother at least. I'm sure he's doing his best to help find me too.
