WEEK 2

[One week. One week spent in the Haunted Mansion, and nothing seems to have changed. The hinges still creak in doorless chambers, strange and frightening sounds still echo through and you still occasionally catch a flicker of candlelight out of the corner of your eye. You might be slowly becoming familiar with the mundanity of this communal life, and we've recognized that possibility.

I thought all the pieces could do multiple jumps but only forward, and kings were core rules...

[Maybe checkers is more complicated than he thought.]

Then that settles it! Least we both know how to play.

[This isn't space checkers, though. It's ghost checkers!]

Yeah! You want to be red or black?

I think you'd like to be red. [He raises his eyebrows, looking at Lea's red hair.]

[Wander has eyebrows?]

Is this about my hair again?

[folkscallmewander]

[If you squint, he can make very thin lines appear over his eyes with the Power of Friendship.]

It's really neat, makes you look all cool and heroic.

Someone said it looked stupid earlier...

[It was EMBARRASSING.]

Whaaat? Noooooo. [Pbbbbbbbbt] It's a lot of work to take care of hair that long, much less style it.

I don't actually style it much. It just does this.

That's even more amazin'!

[He slides the black pieces towards himself.]

So, who goes first? Is it usually red?

[nobodyperfect]

I thought it was black... something about smoke and fire, I dunno.

[He gathers the red pieces!]

[folkscallmewander]

We should flip a coin--uh, chip! [Grabs one] Call your side.

[nobodyperfect]

Not-crown, er... circles! And does the winner go first or pick?

[folkscallmewander]

Winner goes first. [If Wander won, he would take forever in deciding which would make Lea happier.

He flips the chip before he gets a response...and it lands with a crown.]

Alright, so me. [Fair's fair. Wander picks up a chip from the edge and moves it one space.]

[Lea imitates the motion, albeit on one of his own pieces, moving it diagonally, as you do.]

So... you got a name?

[folkscallmewander]

Name's Wander. [Next move.]

[nobodyperfect]

I'm Lea. Got it memorized?

[He taps his temple, then makes another move, pushing one checker from the back row to fill the void he opened last turn.]

[Wander mimics the gesture.]

Nice and tucked away! [He moves a piece closer to the center of the board.]

[nobodyperfect]

[Lea grins and moves a piece as well.]

Good! With all this death stuff, I need as many people to remember as possible!

[folkscallmewander]

No need to get all pessimistic, Lea. We're all in this together!

[Another move.]

[nobodyperfect]

Yeah, I know. It's probably just the atmosphere getting to me.

[He makes another move, putting one of his pieces in capture range of Wander's, but in such a way that they'll trade.]

[folkscallmewander]

[Wander's not in the mood for heavy strategy, especially against a kid, so he takes that easy prey.]

That's why it's important to keep our chins up and greet each mornin' with a smile, no matter how dark things may look!

Yeah, I guess so!

[Wander's optimism is infectious. He takes the piece in return.]

[folkscallmewander]

[He moves another far from Lea's pieces. Let's see if he can get to the point where he can do multiple jumps.]

Come to think of it, we gotta make another party this week. Maybe a checkers tournament? [Not chess because Ford sucks at chess. He probably doesn't even know the rules.]

That sounds pretty fun! I'd be interested, for sure.

[He moves another into a gap, presenting a united front.]
