[. . . Well last week sure was a bloodbath. A bloody, accidental bloodbath. Even with two groups trying to save you, it might start to feel doubtful that you'll ever get out of here alive. Not to mention that Randy almost killed you all on an angry whim and you're still stuck in this madhouse with him of all people.

But hey, there's a silver lining to every cloud! You get a new floor that's not a nightmarish deathscape! Aren't you glad?

[ Basil's finally exploring the new floor. When he gets around to the coffee shop, he sees all those pamphlets and comes to see what's up. (What with how the funeral/wake ended up being for the most part a drinking session, and the fact that she's still in the same top... he really hopes "fervent suddenly-teetotaler" isn't something they're going to be subjected to.)

It's a relief to find the pamphlets are focusing on whatever a "clone" is, instead. ]

I confess I'm unfamiliar with the etiquette for this scenario. Ought I to read through one of these while ignoring the pamphleteer's being right here, or to question the pamphleteer directly while ignoring the pamphlets that no doubt represent a good deal of time and effort?

I gather that being a "clone" is something one tries to keep quiet, where you're from?

Sort of. I mean, a lot of them have an identity crisis and turn evil and try to kill the original. Which is, like, a major bummer.

So. [ What even. ] A "clone" is... a copy of. a person. And both parties are--[ no no, fuck it, it's magic, magic never makes sense, just accept it and move on. ]

This happens often enough, where you're from, that you've a word for it?

Iiiiiit kind of depends? [This is really what the pamphlets are for, she opens one up and points to a doodle of a test tube.] Some clones are from DNA of the original person that are grown into their own people over time. They have a whole different life, but they should look 80% like the original. Then there's clones like me, [Flip to a doodle of a big metal box with Allene climbing out, waving and smiling] where I was made with all of the original's memories and current age and body intact. Instant copy compared to slow copy, gotcha?

Oh yeah, we got clones running left and right. My buddy Laura is actually raising one of her clones right now. Gabby - that's her name - she's like eight I think? So Laura's DNA must've been taken when... well, I don't know when, but when Laura was pretty young I guess. And Laura's already a clone of a guy named Logan. Its like a clone saga with that family.

What an odd place.

...The "slow copies" are both less prone to the identity crises and given more opportunity to keep the entire clone business quiet, aren't they. [ He'd let "and you're the other sort" be unspoken though implied... buuuut what with using herself as the example, it's pretty obvious getting that out there is the whole point. ]

Was passing yourself off as your originator simply an attempt to sidestep this process [ (indicating the pamphlets) ] or...?

Pretty much. I've never really had that problem to be honest. Far as sis and I are concerned, we're twins.

Yeeeaaaah, its kind of a long thing to explain and Doreen is... a bigger hero than I am right now so. I... kinda thought that would be a comfort?

[ Hm. Not unreasonable as an explanation, even if she herself admits it's far from the whole story. ]

Would you say Hades' blowing your cover was an attempt to sow distrust among us, or simply an attempt to make a pest of himself?
