[Karolina and Mulan are dead. The first, and hopefully the last, deaths of your stay here. Hopefully their deaths won't be in vain. Your third week here starts on a solemn note, and the mood here has taken on a significant downward spiral. If it's any consolation (it isn't), you'll find that you have two new floors to explore...even if one of those floors has about twenty STAY OUT signs nailed to it.

[Fiddleford hasn't been eating either, really. His appetite's been off and on and right now it's decidedly off. It's the principle of the thing. He can munch on a piece of bacon and let the others have the rest.]

That's the idea. The more busy the better.

[Buddy ur trying so hard. . .Mike stares blankly at him for a moment, but then can't help but give a light laugh.]

Heh! That's the way to do it. But don't hurt your cheeks, dude.

[Well now he has to try some stuff since Fiddleford is trying so hard. He comes over to sit at the counter.]

So what's the gruely looking stuff?

Oh, it's not gruel. It's mush.

[... That probably doesn't sound any better, huh.]

It's cornmeal. You eat it hot, somethin' like porridge or oatmeal.

. . .Cool! Never had any of those. Heard of oatmeal at least.

But you know what, I think I'm gonna try it. Smells good as heck, that's for sure.

Well that's a start. Go on and grab a bowl. Most folks take it with milk and sugar but it's up to you what you put in.

[If it was proper grits he would be recommending more savory flavors but, look, he wasn't about to quibble with the ghosts about getting proper hominy. He doesn't have the energy for that.]

Like a cereal, huh? Let's see. . .

[He'll try a little bit of milk with it, but he's not a big sugar fanatic. What does smell dang delicious is that bacon though, so he'll try crumbling up a few pieces in it. Bacon never hurts!! He's a little hesitant at first, but then takes a spoonful. . .

and lights the heck up. What is this homecooked meal flavoring???]

Dude. Dude. This is great! Not sure what I was expecting, but it sure as heck wasn't this.

[That actually gets him to smile proper, seeing Mike light up like that. It almost looks a little relieved if anything. He did this to do folks some good and it feels so nice to see that working.

He almost makes a joke about how they must not have good food in Detroit before he realizes that wouldn't be a joke, it'd just be a statement of fact, and also that he might waste the entirety of his good energy on one joke. It's such a precious commodity right now. Better not.]

Good to hear you like it. Never seen someone put bacon in it before and bein' honest with you I don't know why.

[Yeah he. He wouldn't be wrong. Okra mayonnaise muffins come to mind.

Mike keeps on eating though, actually happy to do so for once since getting here. He's not big on cooking himself, so he's mostly been throwing easy stuff together up til now--sandwiches and soups and the like.]

Hey, I don't know much about food, but I know that bacon goes pretty much with everything, right? It'd still taste dang good without it though. Guess growing up on a farm gets you some mad kitchen skills, too.

[Well that's just... hm. Okra's good. Mayonnaise is... passable. But why ruin perfectly good okra with mayonnaise? Yikes.]

Oh, sure. A farm with a whole lot of siblings who all needed to eat. Not that I'm good at anythin' fancy but I can chop up potatoes and scramble an egg just fine. Doesn't need to be fancy to be good, I figure.

Just goes to show the best things really come from the heart.
