Week 5

[...So that was a mess. All of it was a mess, and things don't look to be improving any time soon. With tensions at an all-time high and conditions worsened, it seems pretty safe to say that this whole week promises a great deal of foreboding atmosphere.

But, hey, things aren't entirely bad. Just as Randall promised, you're now able to leave the Manor!

Just don't stay out there for too long. There's still a lot of you, and you just can't afford to lose numbers.

Haaa, yeah, they uh...they definitely do their job, that's for sure. [ She nervously tucks some hair behind her ear. ] He's definitely getting...weirdly creative. Sounds like something from back home.

[ You know, she's gonna get a pair of scissors and join in on the garland making. ]

Yeahhh... it's. It's not good.

[Marco will gladly let her join in, there's plenty of paper to cut as he was totally about to just spend hours in here mindlessly making more garland than anyone needed.]

I walked right into one of them on accident and-- and I can still hear her screaming.. and that song...

[ She swallows and looks a little pale. ]

Every time I close my eyes, their faces, all- horrible, and- [ An involuntary shiver cuts off Kim's words, but it's not like she wants to...go into detail, more than that. ] Yeah. Yeah, I had a brush with one too. Are you- oh, did you see...?

[ There's a person her could be in this context, and she thinks she knows just who. ]

[To that, Marco just nods.]

Ever since Randy told me about her ex..ecution, I've been thinking about it, like, nonstop and it just-- was manifested right in front of my eyes.

[As Marco says this, he stops cutting for a minute so he can run a hand through his hair.]

It was awful.

Marco...

[ She squeezes his arm, frowning in concern. ]

He never should've said any of that to you. He says he's got nothing against us personally, but then- [ She squeezes her eyes shut for a moment. ] We're gonna get her out, okay? Somehow, something's going to fix this.

[Marco gets what she's saying, he really does. Everyone's been telling him this for weeks now -- that they'll get out of here and it'll be okay. But.. sometimes, like this, it's not very helpful. How long is it going to take for someone to save them? When everyone's already dead? The idea of being killed or executed terrifies Marco even though he knows they're not... dead, per-say, and he hates the thought of having to just wait for something to happen.

But he does offer her a little smile at her attempt of cheering him up, that slowly falters when he recalls something.]

...Kim, I don't think we should try reasoning with Randall. I know you think he has a heart in there, somewhere, and that maybe we can get him to understand where we're coming from but I don't think that's.. really... possible, at this point.

[ Her frown deepens. ]

Look, I know it's a long-shot, but...but I've been meeting with him more, just...talking, and I'm- at least I think I'm learning something. I don't know if anything else'll come from it, but...what harm can it do?

We could die.

[Marco says that dead seriously, but his expression softens after a second and he pulls his arm back from her so he can go back to mindlessly cutting paper.]

I'm just worried. Star told me not to let him get to me, and I feel like trying to reason with him and feeling sympathetic for him are just ways of him getting to us.

[ Her face clouds and her shoulders droop slightly. She doesn't seem to have a response to that, for a few long moments. Maybe she's conceding--

No, of course not. ]

I get it. You don't reason with evil. But I... If I can't...fight here, I have to find some way to...figure things out. [ the words she means are be a hero but she's not just going to say that ] Maybe this is my way. I won't make you do it too, but...I don't know, he's already told me stuff. About where we are, or...who he works with.

Kim, I tried reasoning with evil. Many times! During my time with Star, I realized that not all monsters actually are evil, and not all bad people really want to be bad. And sometimes reasoning with them works but other times....

[He stops the cutting, setting the paper and scissors down and turning so he can look Kim in the face while he talks.]

Look, we had two villains that we fought with constantly. Ludo and Toffee. Over time, we learned that Ludo was just a sad, pathetic guy who didn't really want to hurt anybody as much as he said, and Star and I don't really feel any anger towards him for all of the stuff he did in the end. After all that happened he threw himself into some kind of void to try and find himself again and I guess as a punishment or whatever for what he did. That was good, right?

Toffee on the other hand was someone who was just... truly evil. He could convince anyone of anything, and pretend like he was trustworthy to get you to bend to his will. And... because Star's mother fell for his lies, and she was feeling desperate, she tried to reason with him.

It nearly got Star killed. And I'm scared Randall is just another Toffee.

[ While Marco shares, Kim doesn't say a word. She owes it to Marco to listen, and she does. Concern spreads across her face, though she...honestly doesn't look shocked. This sounds kind of like what she was expecting. ]

I'm sorry, Marco...that you went through that. That both of you did. But I... [ ... ] I promise you, I'm being careful. For every Toffee out there...there's a Ludo, or...or someone who's been manipulated into it. I don't think Randall's that one. But...I want to believe there's something else.

I won't...let this get me hurt.

[Kim's reply just elicits a frustrated sounding sigh out of Marco. Of course she wouldn't give up on this so easily, even after all he said... he wishes he could say that he doesn't blame her for wanting to try, but he does. He thinks its a stupid idea, and that it'll only backfire on them like telling him about karaoke or asking him if they could leave.

But he's still Kim's friend, so even though he's frustrated he won't argue with her about this.]

Since you're really set on this, I won't stop you Kim. And I won't just leave you to do it on your own, no matter how much I don't want to try.

But you have to promise me that as soon as it seems like Randall's going to attack or whatever, you'll get the heck out of there.

[ She understands his frustration. It's hard to sit here and tell him no, especially with all he's been through...

But Kim can't help but remember Tommy, remember Kat, and how a little kindness could go a long way. In her heart...she wouldn't be herself, if she gave up. ]

Promise. I'm not going to make myself a martyr for that guy. [ She places her hand over his and gives it a squeeze. ] Thank you. I know this can't be easy and...I'm really, really stubborn...but it means a lot to me.

[Marco gives her a smile that looks a little strained, and he reaches to place his other hand over hers.]

I get it, Kim. I deal with Star on a daily basis who can be, like, the most stubborn person in the world sometimes. I mean she almost got us killed over a sandwich once so honestly this isn't really as bad of an idea as it could be.

[....]

But just so we're clear, I'm gonna bring my axe when we go to talk to him.

[ It's likely the surprise of the statement, or how exhausting of a day it's been, but Kim laughs at that. ]

Oh, of course. I'm, uh, trying to soften him up, so hopefully it won't be needed...but I gotta tell you, if I had my bow? It'd be on my back every time.

[Well since he got Kim laughing, it puts a smile on his own face and he takes his hands back so he can go back to cuttin' up some paper.]

It's just good to be safe, that's all. I don't want him to actually smash us with his mallet this time.

[ Let's make that garland, Marco. ]

Makes two of us there.
