Week 5

[...So that was a mess. All of it was a mess, and things don't look to be improving any time soon. With tensions at an all-time high and conditions worsened, it seems pretty safe to say that this whole week promises a great deal of foreboding atmosphere.

But, hey, things aren't entirely bad. Just as Randall promised, you're now able to leave the Manor! 

Just don't stay out there for too long. There's still a lot of you, and you just can't afford to lose numbers.

...You know, if it's something you...didn't want to see, that's alright. I mean...I think we've all gotten something a little unpleasant, at least.

Nah, it’s... [He trails off, his other hand disappearing to worry the hat some more under the table.] It’s just a hat I used to sell in the gift shop I ran.

Does it...bring back bad memories?

...[He pulls the hat back up and sets it on the table.]

First day they came to spend the summer with me, Mabel and her brother both came in looking like they’d been drug through a lane of briars, so I let ‘em both pick something out from the gift shop to cheer ‘em up. Mabel picked out a grappling hook. [He chuckles fondly.] Dipper picked out one of these.

[ A light smile, of course that rambunctious little girl would choose a grappling hook. However... ]

Her twin, the one she was looking...for... [ She recalls...a few things from the second trial. ] O-oh. Oh, Mr. Pines, I'm...

[stanbyme]

[The fond smile fades. His voice is already rough, but now it sounds a little thin and tight.]

He’s a smart kid. Real bright, but real nervous. I got to talk to him, at least, let him know we’re gonna get him back.

[He props his elbows on the table, bows his head, and presses his palms to his forehead to hide his face from view.]

...He musta been so... [His throat chokes up around the word “scared.”]

[ She lays a hand on Stan's shoulder. ]

It's absolutely horrible, that they keep...pulling kids into all this. [ ... ] They won't get away with it. We'll stop them and...you can see your nephew again.

[stanbyme]

[He doesn't need to be patronized, but he's also too tired to buck away from the hand on his shoulder.]

The coward musta taken 'em separate 'cause he knew they're unstoppable together.

[He doesn't look up at her.]

...Thanks, kid.

Don't worry about it. We're in this together, aren't we? ...And...you know, you make Leia happy.

[That gets him to crack a little bit of a smile.]

She makes me pretty happy too.

You both need someone you can talk to, like...an adult. I know this place must be rough on both of you too.
